SEM 1- Project 2 Site Map Research

This is James Corner’s site map of High Line Park in New York. The High line Park is a park on a bridge and used to be a railway line. I have chosen this site as a part of my research because a bridge is a unique place to construct a park and the idea of a long bridge turned into a park relates to the threshold of horizontal and vertical.

Parc de la Villette park in Paris has Bernard Tschumi’s work of deconstructivism architecture. There are many large, red structures scattered around the park and these structures are deconstructed parts of a larger structure all designed by Bernard Tschumi. I have chosen this site as a part of my research because it relates to the threshold of horizontal and vertical, as well as the idea of these structures being in a park/ public space. The idea of scattered structures is relevant to the theme of sleep and wake because it resembles a dream being cut off into smaller bits and pieces due to disturbances in sleep.

Cloud Gate is a famous sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor and it resides in Chicago. This large, shiny and curvy sculpture is also in a public space. I have chosen a structure that does not have any horizontal or vertical aspects to it because I wanted to do some research on sculptures that are not straight and solid but rather have a free and flowing aspect to it due to its curves.

I want to use my research and some aspects from the sites and structures above in my site map to create a threshold of horizontal and vertical in the theme of sleep and wake. This threshold will be a part of the St Paul St Gallery 3. I plan to create a horizontal threshold between the door of the gallery and a space for sleeping and waking that is likely to have the idea of deconstruction in it. I plan to have a vertical layout of my site map, giving me more vertical space for my planning and drawing.
